Description: DESCRIPTION: In our opinion, the digweedii is one of the most INCREDIBLE blooms in the world of crinums 'Helen McRory' is one of the many varieties of digweedii that we have in our collection of over 1000 different crinum. Digweedii also go by the common name Nassau Lily and it is a term that refers to any hybrid form of Milk and Wine crinum that have a star, not a trumpet shape, with wide, overlapping tepals/sepals. 'Helen McRory has as many as 8, 8" diameter, star-shaped blooms and our larger bulbs have produced 32" tall scapes. It offsets moderately and bulbs never grow to more than about 3 1/2" in diameter. They are VERY fragrant, smelling like lilac. The spindle-shaped bulbs multiply by short stolons (very short fleshy root extension that grow out from base of the bulb) to form compact, upright clumps. They will form large, beautiful clumps if left undisturbed for many years. Once nice feature is that large bulbs can produce 6 or more offsets in a year. BACKGROUND: Officially named C x Digweedii when crossed in 1820, was probably a cross of C. americanum and C. scabrum. In collections it appears under pseudonyms such as Erubescens, Fimbriaulum, Submersum or ‘Royal White.’ It is none of these. They date back in the South over 125 years where sisters in San Patricio, TX convent cultivated them as early as 1876. Stars and Stripes is one hybrid form of Digweedii from Thad Howard. 'Helen McRory' came to me via another collector who obtained his bulb from Helen McRory who found it in her mother's garden in Cairo, GA. GROWING CONDITIONS: This is a semi-hardy and easy to grow bulb requiring no special care. It tolerates a wide range of soils and cool temperatures, at least to zone 8. They appear in the second half of the summer opening in the early evening and you can smell them just walking nearby. They should do best planted in the ground in full sun or partial shade, but they will also make excellent container plants. They can survive nicely out of the ground for very extended periods if allowed to dry.
