I was the publisher for “The Unitrade Press” back in the eighties. I happened to be in a Coin Shop in Vancouver when I noticed a plain typewritten manuscript on a shelf, with a title page, “Canadian Orders, Decorations and Medals”. This was pre-desktop publishing days and it wasn’t impressive. Stapled in one corner like a high-school essay, it had only a few tiny pictures on the very last page. But as I looked it over, I realized the content had been well researched. When I asked the dealer where he got it, he told me it was just some local guy but he had a phone number. I bought a copy for $2.00 and brought it back to Unitrade. When I showed it to the owners, I still recall their snort of derision asking what that piece of junk was for. I told them that we were going to publish it and they just laughed. Undaunted, I got in touch with John Blatherwick, who it turned out, was the Chief Medical Officer for the City of Vancouver” (later became the Chief Medical Officer for all of British Columbia). He was tickled pink that I was interested in his manuscript even when I suggested revisions and explained that we would have to have photos of all the Decorations. Well, to make a long story short, Unitrade has published 4 editions of the book, selling close to 10,000 copies. We also ended up publishing John’s work, “A Thousand Brave Canadians” and a third not as successful book, “The History of Canadian Airlines”. The Airlines book was actually very well written and received good reviews but it was so far out of Unitrade’s expertise, that they never sold a large quantity."
