Additionally, you should be using pan reinforcement rails on any steel pan that doesn't have them built in if you don't want to have leaks from pan rail distortion and/or uneven clamping force on the pan rails/gasket. Naturally, these rails add thickness and as a result you'll either not be able to get a stock length bolt to work because it's too short or, you'll be cussing and fighting those bolts to get them started. Don't forget - studs also make gasket installation and alignment much easier and they provide more even clamping force compared to bolts.
