Description: 21" Bébé Mascotte Closed Mouth May Frères Cie. / Jules Steiner / Jumeau Original Antique Doll - Made in France [ FEATURES AND DETAILS... ] This is a gorgeous French Bébé Mascotte, c.1890s, with head incised (only) "M 8" and body stamped "BÉBÉ JUMEAU Bté SGDG Déposé." BÉBÉ MASCOTTE'S COLORFUL HISTORY: The Mascotte has connections with both STEINER and JUMEAU. According to The Collector’s Encyclopedia of Dolls, by the Colemans (1986 Ed., Volume II, page 114), "Bébé Mascotte" originated in 1882 and the trademark was originally registered to May Frères Cie., though the bodies were sometimes clearly marked Jumeau [as you see this one is]. This suggests that May Frères did not make their own bodies, only the heads. Colemans also mentions that the heads were sometimes marked with just an "M" and size number (as this one is), though other examples have heads marked with a Roman numeral III, or heads and/or bodies fully marked with the words "Mascotte" or "Bébé Mascotte" (as their book shows an example from Sotheby auction house). According to the online authority Doll Reference, Jules Steiner "acquired May Frères - Bébé Mascotte." (This connection is corroborated by Bonhams auction house, listing "Bébé Mascotte" by Steiner.) The Mascotte continued in production through 1901, according to Coleman's. Your Mascotte -- standing approx. 20.5" -- is a beautiful doll that would be an asset to any fine collection. She is simply stunning and in excellent condition. She has her original Steiner cardboard pate and soft human hair wig in light brown. Her closed-mouth bisque head is expertly painted and shows only ear flake/chips at the piercings. Gray-blue paperweight eyes peep out from her sweet Steiner brows. Her antique aqua-green silk outfit is well made and amazingly accented with a silk coral, turquoise, and sage embroidered jabot high collar, and button-down netted bodice. Her coral-and-turquoise earrings match the outfit, as does her silk and lace antique hat. Antique pantaloons and flannel slip, antique crocheted stockings, and pink cloth shoes complete her wonderful attire. She is holding a lovely vintage folding hand fan, made of real wood with a pierced design, in perfect condition. She is well priced and ready to be displayed in your collection! [ CONDITION... ] - Beautiful antique condition -- from a non-smoking environment.- No issues found with the bisque after careful examination, other than the ear flakes mentioned above. (See photo.)- The composition Jumeau-stamped body and is in excellent condition, with average surface wear, but does show repaint to her left hand (see photo) and possibly a touch of it on the right hand as well. IMPORTANT: Besides the noteworthy issues mentioned above, EXPECT any antique doll (bisque/composition/leather/china/wood) to ALSO have: (1) SIGNS OF AGE - for example: toned/crazed/chipped composition, minor wig pulls, loss of "hair" lashes on bisque heads, not-so-tight stringing, etc., and ... (2) MINOR CONSERVATION WORK by previous owners/collectors - for example: reset eyes (in most cases!), repairs to wig, repairs to clothing, touch-ups on composition/finish/paint, etc. SO ... Any MAJOR issues -- hairline crack, total repaint, etc. -- would be itemized above, but these normal age/conservation details are not. They are to be expected. [ RETURN POLICY ON DOLL LOTS... ]It is with deep regret that -- after 14 years selling on eBay, and with 100% positive feedback -- I've had to change my return policy on dolls to "NO RETURNS, AND NO PARTIAL REFUNDS."As often happens, it's the few bad apples out there who ruin it for the rest of us. These dishonest people will buy a doll, then try to improve or restore it ... not knowing what they're doing. And then, when they realize they've ruined the doll, they return it saying it was defective. Or else they keep the doll and demand a "partial refund" based on the alleged defect -- which is another trending scam on eBay.I sell these dolls for a living so, my sincere apologies to you -- the honest majority of eBay buyers -- that I can no longer afford to accept doll returns. (Of course, shipping loss or damage is a different matter; that is fully covered by insurance.)BUT HAVING SAID ALL THAT ...I do bend over backwards, attempting to disclose any noteworthy condition issues I can find or think of. But these are antique and vintage dolls -- so, please understand that they won't be in brand-new condition. There will always be some minor indication of their age, and it would be impossible to itemize every single pinhead-size stain on the outfit, or hairline scratch on the body. Please expect these types of conditions with old dolls. [Blurb required by eBay for cell phone users:] *** PLEASE VIEW THE FULL DESCRIPTION BEFORE BIDDING. IT CONTAINS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION.
