Description: 100% authentic and original EXTREMELY RARE, NEAR PRISTINE to MINT STATE - PRE WAR OF 1812 Silvered obverse copper stags head Vermont Militia Button. 9/10 inch in size. Condition report: Silvered Obverse retains its original luster and patina, this button has never been cleaned, found in a tin of old buttons from Vermont, purchased at a yard sale in Randolph Center in 2023 and it has been in a private collection since then. This button retains an amazing luster and original patina. Struck on obverse with a die that clearly hadn’t been used much, all of the high points on the button are sharp and extremely defined. The obverse fields of the button show a clear silver color with some build up of carbon running from the 2 to 9 o’clock regions but in a quite brilliant and eye appealing form. The very slightest of silver loss on the very outside edges of just a few letters and around the stags ear but not enough to notice without close examination. (See photos available) Overall the silvered surface retains nearly 100% of its original form. Just a stunning button to see in person and the photos will likely do it no justice. Button somehow survived over 200 years without sustaining a scratch or any bends or dings. In numismatic standards this button would grade at a Mint State 67 and that’s being conservative. It’s just a gem. We have been professional numismatic experts for many many years, 20 plus years & we see many buttons come in with coin collections, this is by far the best button we have ever seen for local Vermont pieces! Just a spectacular piece and one that survived 200 plus years in a tin of old buttons, it’s truly an amazing find! Reverse of the button is engraved by hand, with wheat leafing and “warranted” which are clearly visible. The copper loop on reverse has been slightly bent but would easily return to its original upright position with ease and the overall structure of the loop/hook and button is 100 percent sound. Composition of the button is copper planchet struck with a traditional coin die with a silvered obverse (front) and hand engraved reverse featuring wheat leafs and hand engraved letters.
