Atomic says this is the first "compromise free binding", and for the skier who is looking to get out of bounds, or maybe even just into side country, this is really a game changer. If functions totally as two completely different bindings in one ultra lightweight package. With the toe piece closed, it grabs the boot just like any other Alpine binding ever made. The heel closes just like any other Alpine heel, and it skis very, very well. The link between boot and ski is nice a tight, but the overall weight is incredibly light. But then, flip the toe open and you have a completely different Pin Tech binding that grabs the Tech fittings in the toe of your boots, the brake locks up out of the way, and the heel of your boot is free, just like any other AT binding. Uphill has never been easier, followed by amazing down hill performance like no other binding before Shift. It is an amazing piece of engineering that will blow your mind the first time you use it. Part of the magic also of Shift is that it can be so incredibly light weight, and still offer such a stiff coupling between boot and ski. In the AT world, where bindings mostly ski very poorly downhill, Shift is a total game changer. Extensive use of carbon fiber technology and a design that was intended to be as lightweight as possible every step of the way results in something that has never been done before. The entire binding chassis is super stiff, and offers no compromise whatsoever in terms of the link between boot and ski. MNC stands for Multi Norm Certified, meaning this binding can fit any named ski boot norm that might ever want to be matched up with it. However, to get the most out of this binding in the uphill mode, a ski boot with tech fittings in the toe are a necessity. Other than that, it can be an Alpine sole, Grip Walk sole, or AT (All Terrain) norm boot sole. This Atomic branded version of this binding is identical to the Salomon branded version, except for differences in color choices, and in the brand name printed on the binding.
