Description: Arrowsmith by Sinclair Lewis Modern Library #42 New York: The Modern Library, 1933 Stated "First Modern Library Edition". First Printing. Binding Style 7. Arrowsmith was first published in the Spring 1933 catalog, & this is a first issue dust jacket with the Spring 1933 catalog listed on inverse side (list of titles includes Lewis's Arrowsmith but lacks Gertrude Stein's Three Lives) Flexible, stiff "balloon cloth" boards. Blue cloth with gilt torchbearer design to front & gilt titles to spine. Blue top stain. 448 pp. 4-5/8" x 6-7/8". Very good in good dust jacket. Light foxing to final few pages & end paper; bookstore label to front end paper. Otherwise, interior clean & unmarked. Crease to final page of text. Binding firm; slight slant to spine. Mild warping to covers due to poor storage, with corresponding mild warping to corners of final 50 pages. Covers have wear to head of spine with board exposed just a bit; light rubbing along edges; softening at corners & spine ends; mild fading to spine & around edges of front board. Dust jacket has 1/2-inch tear to top front edge; wear along edges with a few short edge tears; short tears & a bit of loss at corners; large sticker scar to upper rear panel & onto spine; general overall soiling & toning, with some larger stains to front & spin. DJ comes protected by new, archival cover. A bit of wear & tear, but still an attractive & desirable copy of the first Modern Library edition of Lewis's Pulitzer Prize winning novel. Uncommon in the original dust jacket. A nice addition to your collection or as a gift. Ships well-packed in a box.
