Unframed.36 x 29 inch oil on canvas is a size that notable American portraitists of the period painted in. Many artists of the time were itinerant painters and the quality of work ranged from naive to more academic.I can recommend researching by size (36 x 29) if you want to try to figure out which artist may have painted this oil (?). The stretchers have beveled edges, which is indicative of the painting being American.It’s been suggested this could be a portrait of Lyman Beecher, the father of Harriet Beecher Stowe. Whether it is or not doesn’t really matter to me. I think the man looks like Ebenezer Scrooge (!), which is why I personally like it. I posted some pictures above so that you can decide who you think the sitter is.The painting is in need of restoration. It’s falling off the stretchers and has tears through the canvas, paint losses, etc. It’s uncleaned and hard to take good photos of as it stands. It’ll come as pictured with 2 clips clamping the canvas down (I put them there), masking tape on back (which doesn't want to stay stuck there), and I’ll also include in an envelope the tacking margins that fell off.If you have the painting relined, the fill and touch-ins aren’t going to be ridiculous. It should come in at maybe 5% inpaint. I consider the condition to be common for a painting this old. Art restoration is expensive, but I can refer you to a few restorers I know here in the Philly area, if you'd like. Feel welcome to message me.
