CARD BACK PANEL COPY History of your Lucky Lincoln Penny The first Lincoln penny was minted in 1909, the 100th anniversary of the birth of President Abraham Lincoln. President Roosevelt selected the bronze plaque sculpture of Lincoln by Victor David Brenner to become the new image on the United States' one-cent coin. This image of Lincoln replaced the Indian Head. The coin’s reverse design featured two ears of wheat. In 1959, the Mint celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Lincoln penny and the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth by changing the reverse design. Mint engraver Frank Gasparro designed the new reverse to feature the Lincoln Memorial. This 1959 penny became the first widely circulated United States coin to simultaneously show a figure of the same person on both sides. The 95% copper penny was minted from 1959 until 1982. Ultimately, the price of copper dictated a change in the composition of the Lincoln penny. Starting in 1982 approximately half of the pennies were minted with 95% copper, and the rest were copper plating over a zinc core. The Lincoln Memorial penny was last made in 2008 and was replaced by the Lincoln Bicentennial One Cent program. Each year, the U.S. Mint produces between 5 to 16 billion pennies. Making the penny over two-thirds of all coins produced by the U.S. Mint.
