Description: Antique Set of 6 "Wood & Challinor" Historical Green Transferware CORSICA 7-inch Plates ~ Circa 1835 These amazing plates are nearly 200 years old! 1828-1841 ~ Corsica Plate A similar plate to this also by "Wood & Challinor' is in the Smithsonian Institution. These six scalloped-edge plates have an unusual shade of a bluish green transfer-printed decoration on a white ground. The central scene depicts a Renaissance couple surrounded by classical architectural structures, columns, urns and mountainous landscape. The border has four alternating cartouches, two with architectural motifs, two with baskets of blooming flowers; between each reserve are dense patterns with alternating decorative motifs. Printed on the undersides is a back stamp with a neoclassical urn flanked by flowers on top of a base with "Corsica" printed across it. Beneath is a looped rope motif in which "W. and C." (Wood & Challinor) are printed within open reserves. Please look closely at all the plates and discover how they are each slightly different from each other. Particularly notice how the cartouches on the border are not all in the same positions. This set of six plates are in very good antique condition. Four of the plates are nearly perfect and two have light cracks that are pointed out with arrows in the last few photos. Please see all photos as they are an important part of the descriptionEach plate is photographed individuallyThe plates are a deep saucer type plate and they measure 7-1/4 inches in diameter x 1 inchEach plate weighs approximately 8 ounces ~ all 6 plates weigh 2 lbs.,15 oz (without packaging)They will be very carefully packaged and shipped to you via USPS Priority Mail with insurance and signature required at delivery.THANKS FOR STOPPING BY Notes: The partnership of John Wood and Edward Challinor came into being in 1828 at Brownhills Pottery, Tunstall.
