2 CLASSIC GOLD QUARTZ SPECIMENS .85 GRAM QUEENSLAND GOLD IN QUARTZ

Description: GOLD & QUARTZ from QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA Ruler is 1/4" wide (6 mm). U.S. 10 cent coin is 17 mm in diameter. Specimen weight: 13.2 Grains (Troy) - .85 Grams Sizes: 10 mm long (each piece) Here's two chunks of quartz each with VG, visible gold. They're small, so check my photos, weight, and measurements for the correct scale. This ore originated in the Gympie-Eldorado, a hard rock mine in Queensland, Australia. One piece is comprised of white quartz while the other is quartz intruded with greyish wall rock. Embryonic gold is often associated with silicon dioxide (quartz). As they cool down together, each crystallizes in sequence. Often, other minerals are associated with the gold. All my specimens show naturally-occurring gold and are authentic gold nuggets or gold matrix specimens. U.S. SHIPPING $4.00 (includes USPS tracking to all U.S. destinations) INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS S&H $16.00 FAST REFUND OFFERED (If, for any reason, you're not happy with this item). I poured through old mining dumps for years looking at orange-yellow-rusty rock through a loupe, but never found a solitary piece with visible gold in it. THE WORLD OF GOLD QUARTZ Welcome to the world of natural gold quartz. For those unfamiliar with this product, GQ is, essentially, very high-grade gold ore found in the earth's outer mantle. When geological conditions are right, metallic gold crystallizes, along with quartz, inside of fissures and various rock formations. This occurs as super-heated solutions full of silica and metals cool. It was once thought all precious metal deposits formed beneath the ocean, but in recent times, geologists made the discovery that high-elevation hot springs were producing ore bodies of tremendous stature all along. Gold recovered from these kinds of lodes is microscopic, so placer deposits aren't typically associated with them. Placer exists when erosion breaks down prominent, gold-bearing quartz veins which is another animal entirely. Gold, in this manner, is released into the environment where it begins it's downhill jaunt eventually making it's way into watersheds. It becomes 'free gold' or placer gold, the kind recovered by the 49ers. Being basically soft and malleable, larger pieces takes on strange, new shapes. Many nuggets I've found looked at though a sculptor had carved or chiseled them. Some still retain parts of the original vein filling as host rock (gangue). When this matrix harbors metalliferous gold, it can become one of the earth's more highly-prized gemstones. The ideal criteria for this medium are hardness, color, and richness. The best grades of gem-grade rock are hard, unbrecciated, with minimal cracks, fissures, and vugs. Cryptocrystalline quartz/gold, a considerably-harder silicate matrix, is highly-prized by gemologists/lapidaries/jewelers/and collectors. Overall mineral compositions and characteristics of true gold-stone found in fissure veins (and larger ore bodies) vary from one deposit to the next resulting in a variety of colored matrix (host rock). The metallic mineral, gold, occurs in many geological environments around the planet. Here in the U.S., the most note-worthy mining state is Nevada. In recent years, The Silver State has become a gold-mining juggernaut. In modern-day mining operations, entire mountains are blasted apart, transported by trucks and piled into heaps. Ore is then soaked with cyanide solution. This phase leaches precious metal from it's host rock. Other ore types require different extractive processes to remove and recover the gold. A century ago, this type of mining was unknown. Back then, picture some lone-burro prospector on a solitary trek into the desert spotting a quartz ledge. A real prospector might have had the tools and know-how to conduct assays right at the site. Maybe he dolly-potted some of the ore, panned it out, and spotted a good line of color. At that point, maybe he started sinking a shaft or driving a tunnel into the vein. Do you have any idea how hard and tedious this would be?!! Mucked and hauled from his primitive excavation, ore then had to be crushed to release the gold locked up inside. Losses would have been high due to the inefficiency of the extractive methods used. In early times, arrastras were the most prevalent of primitive devices used to pulverize rock and free gold up from the ore. Stamp mills eventually were built and put to use. These 'widow-makers' increased production ten-twenty-a hundred fold by allowing substantially-more ore to be milled and processed. Many mining boom towns were branded 'widow-makers' on account of how much silica dust was ingested by humans over a prolonged period of time. The human lung was never intended to breathe in quartz dust. Try to imagine clouds of finely-powdered silica enveloping a townsite day and night. An old time prospector's first inkling of a lode probably would have been a quartz ledge. Rich placers below a vein, one holding coarse, unweathered gold provides very strong evidence that the ledge is (or was) productive. At one time, quartz veins were notorious producers of gold. Many fissure-type lode deposits such as the Homestake Mine in South Dakota and California's Sixteen to One Mine were followed to great depth. Ore grades rarely remain consistent throughout the life of a mine. Veins also become displaced through movement in the earth's crust. There's no shortages of reasons why deep quartz leads were become unprofitable to mine. Water seepage was another major problem encountered in many of the historic mines scattered around the western U.S. mining states Sometimes, a productive vein slips. Of course this doesn't occur overnight and it's not caused by a banana peel. Geological movement in the earth over long periods of time reshapes the internal morphology of the earth's outer crust. In-situ veins shift to unexpected positions in country rock and, in this manner, are lost to miners attempting to follow discontinuous leads. Prices for metals also fluctuate dramatically. Many factors influence the availability, production, and profitability of gold quartz mining and the end product itself. Only a scant handful of mines around the world produce gem-grade material. Even when a new high-tenor ore deposit is found, collectors and dealers are tasked with procuring something not publicly offered or made available by the mines themselves. Thanks for checking out our digs. Gold of Eldorado 8-13-17
