Description: Charles Hunt (1803-1877), after Francis Calcraft Turner (1782-1846); "A Southerly Wind & A Cloudy Sky", plate IV (of set of four) from "The Fox Chase"; hand colored engraving with aquatint, published 1857, Ackermann & Co., 96 Strand, London. Very large sheet - 25 x 21 1/4"; plate 21 3/8 x 18 1/4". Very fine condition, vivid colors; some very slight surface nicks, almost imperceptible (to the right of and below horse); three tears below plate mark, repaired and stabilized on to backing sheet. (see pics). Title "The Fox Chase" LC, above remarque of punch bowl and grapes. Provenance Phyllis Lucas Old Print Center. Turner was a prolific sport painter, primarily fox hunting and race horses; he believed he had run in more fox hunts than any other artist then living! He was a regular contributor to Sporting Magazine. Charles Hunt (along with his brother George) was an engraver as well as painter of genre and sporting scenes.
