Description: 1969 MICHIGAN vs OHIO STATE Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor Michigan One of the most shocking upsets in the first 100 years of NCAA football took place on November 22, 1969, as the defending National Champion and undefeated Ohio State Buckeyes played at Michigan! Normally, the Ohio State-Michigan game is considered a toss-up, but going into the season finale in ’69, Michigan had already lost two games and had a new head coach. On the other hand, OSU coach Woody Hayes had one of his finest teams. The Buckeyes had tied the conference record with 22 wins in a row, and had not lost at Ann Arbor in ten years! Some sportswriters were calling the Bucks the greatest college team of all time and installed the Buckeyes as 17-point favorites – at Michigan Stadium! But, by the end of the day, a sky-high Michigan team led by first year head coach Bo Schembechler, had totally outplayed Ohio State, and the “Woody vs Bo Ten-Year war” had begun! Included are pre-game interviews with Jack Tatum of Ohio State, Jim Mandich of Michigan and Ohio State coach Woody Hayes. All the color and pageantry of college football is much in evidence throughout, with both the Ohio State and Michigan band shows featured. The Ohio State cheerleaders also were filmed, and shown are Suzi Yung, Dianne Barker, Adi Wibbeler, Sally Eickholt, Cheri Romigh, Bev Beall and Suzy Eberle. The defensive starters from both teams are shown before the game and nice closeups show each player in front of the camera. Buckeye fans will note many great players including Dave Whitfield, Paul Schmidlin, Jim Stillwagon, Bill Urbanik, Mark Debevc, Doug Adams, Phil Strickland, Jack Tatum, Ted Provost, Tim Anderson and Mike Sensibaugh. Michigan fans will never forget these names that made history that day: Mike Keller, Fred Grambau, Henry Hill, Pete Newell, Cecil Pryor, Marty Huff, Mike Taylor, Thom Darden, Barry Pierson, Brian Healy, Tom Curtis and Dana Coin. Of course on the other side of the ball, the names become even more famous! For Ohio State: Rex Kern, Jim Otis, Leo Hayden, Jan White, Dave Cheney, Alan Jack, Tom DeLeone, Tom Campana, Larry Zelina, Bruce Jankowski, Dick Kuhn, Ray Gillian, Brian Donovan Ron Maciejowski, Mike Polaski, Nick Roman, and Stan White. More Michigan players shown throughout the game include quarterback Don Moorhead, Mandich, Dan Dierdorf, Glenn Doughty, Garvie Craw, Billy Taylor, John Gabler, Mike Hankwitz, Mike Oldham, Ed Moore, Frank Gusich, Tom Curtis, Cecil Pryor, Tim Killian, Frank Titas and many more! When Jan White takes a 23-yard Rex Kern pass for a touchdown to open the second quarter Ohio State leads 12-7 and has scored TD’s on two of it’s first three possessions. But the Bucks cannot stop a determined Wolverine team, which then scores it’s second TD after a long drive to take the lead for good, 14-12. Within two minutes, Barry Pierson takes back an Ohio State punt to the OSU three-yard line and Michigan quickly scores again to lead 21-12. Killian’s FG to end the half makes the score 24-12 at halftime. Michigan dominates the second half, even though there is no further scoring (UM misses four FG tries in the second half, each is short). Shown is the post-game celebration, as the NCAA record crowd of 103,588 revels in one of the great college football upsets of all time and one of the most significant games in the history of Michigan football!
