So was Kathryn Stedman: Kathryn Stedman, famous Palo Alto landscape architect and tree lover, died Sept. 26 1996at her home in Palo Alto. She was 97.She was perhaps best known locally for her devotion to preserving and protecting Palo Alto's trees.She considered herself a missionary in getting people to take trees seriously, said Peg North, her sister.To many, she was considered the "Grand Dame of Trees," and in 1959 the city of Palo Alto published her book, "The Trees of Palo Alto," a veritable dictionary of the city's trees and their locationsIn March of 1992, the city planted several special trees in her honor at the north end of the Main Library on Newell Road.A native of Claremont, N.H., she grew up in upstate New York, in the town of Glens Falls. After graduating from Vassar College in 1922, she embarked upon a career in merchandising in New York City, first working as sportswear editor for Women's Wear Daily and later in an executive positions for Best and Co. and R.H. Macy. In 1930, she left New York to marry Robert Imlay; the marriage ended 12 years later.She then moved to San Francisco, where she studied with Rudolph Shaefer and made new friends in the art world. She went to Boston to further her education in design, studying at the Lowthorpe School in Groton, Mass., There she met the famous artist Joseph Albers, whose concepts of art and design led her into the field of landscape architecture.In 1944, she moved to Palo Alto and joined Geraldine Scott, an accomplished landscape architect. The two formed the partnership Scott and Imlay in Palo Alto.Around that time, she met Henry Morgan Stedman, a well-known architect who she later married. The two collaborated on several projects, many of which frequented the pages of SUNSET MAGAZINE and House Beautiful.Renowned developer Joseph Eichler became interested in her work, commissioning her to design fencing, walkways and planting schemes for 100 of his homes. In 1954, Life magazine featured her landscape work on a lavender Eichler home.In the late 1950s, she joined the faculty at Stanford, teaching landscape architecture.She and her husband were very involved with a number of environmental issues affecting San Mateo County.They were among the founders of the Committee for Green Foothills, a community-based organization that advocates the protection and preservation of the environment in the Bay Area. In 1966, she published "Skyline Landscape," a booklet prepared for the group.Her final contribution was a week-long program called "A Celebration of Trees" in 1981.
