Two Early Fox Trots by West Coast Orchestra ART HICKMAN recorded in San Francisco Art Hickman was a man way ahead of his time. While the nation was falling in love with Dixieland Jazz, Hickman and his orchestra were working out the kinks to what would come to be known as the Big Band sound! Sure, they could play Dixieland as hot and as sweet as anybody, but their real forte was something much bigger and less conventional.Art Hickman's Orchestra – The Love Nest / Song Of The OrientLabel: Columbia – A2955Format: Shellac, 78 RPM, 10Released: Aug 1920The Love Nest Medley Fox TrotWritten-By – Hirsch*A1 The Love Nest A2 Mary B Song Of The OrientWritten-By – Rosenthal*Record Company – Columbia Graphophone CompanyDance music; fox trots.Side A: Introducing Mary from "Mary".A side (mx. 79270, take 3) recorded New York, NY, June 11, 1920.B side (mx. 79271, take 2) recorded New York, NY, June 11, 1920. In those early years of Jazz he was even described by the press as the originator of Jazz, which was clearly not the case and which Hickman also denied. In 1916 the jazz craze started up in New York City with the success of the Original Dixieland Jass Band. The popularity of this style of music continued to grow and in 1919 the Hickman Orchestra went to New York to play at the Biltmore Hotel and record with Columbia. The trip was very successful for the band and they returned briefly to San Francisco in 1920, but they were soon offered a part in Ziegfeld Follies. The Follies was one of the hottest show business tickets in those days and the Hickman returned to New York and were part of the show for five months in 1920. In 1921 Hickman sent a smaller group to London, England to play under the name of Art Hickman's New York London Five. Hickman did not accompany band on this trip. Returning to California the band played residencies at hotels in San Francisco and Los Angeles. In 1926 Hickman Orchestra joined another Ziegfeld show, this time in Palm Beach, Florida, but in the midst all of this success, Hickman's health began to fail and he had to turn down gigs. In 1929 he was hospitalized and he died in 1930 of Banti's disease. The style of Jazz that Art Hickman's Orchestra played had a lot in common with the early music of Paul Whiteman's Orchestra (who also started out in San Francisco). If for any reason your transaction was NOT SATISFACTORY, pls contact me and I will work something out with you. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A REASON TO GIVE ME A NEGATIVE RATING or a LOW STAR RATING. Quick note on grading: The Grade (Excellent to Poor, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to P), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise."EXCEPTIONALLY QUIET" is close to noiseless, like a vinyl pressing."VERY QUIET" is an above average quiet record for a given pressing."Quiet" is a record that is a great example with some noise. These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment. Multiple item shipping: I am happy to combine items for shipment in one parcel.
