Description: This is a great picture of what I think is a Union Army Officer. Here is what I have learned about this picture: The crossed rifle insignia was not used until after the Civil War. This insignia is crossed rifles with “8” above and “G” below the rifles. The buckle, an eagle inside of a wreath, appears to be from the Civil War. I THINK it’s an office due to some sort of adornment on the bill of his cap and the epaulets on his shoulders….likely his rank. And that he is carrying a sword. The picture itself is from Thwaites Photography in Portland, Oregon. It is my understanding that these type of photos (photos attached to these cardboard cards) were used in the 1800s up to around 1906. This specific photo, the photo itself, has square corners as opposed to rounded corners which dates the picture to somewhere between 1900 and 1906……rounded corners were used before 1900. It’s a great picture for your military collection!
