1885 Family Heirloom Crazy Quilt 46.5” by 56.25”

Description: This Family Heirloom Crazy Quilt measures 46.5” by 56.25” and consists of 30 squares arranged 5 across and 6 down (each 9.25”x 9.25”). Each square consists of hand stitched decorative embroidery and appliques made from a mix of velvet, cotton and silks obtained at the closing of the 1876Centennial in Philadelphia. The quilt is fully backed with burgundy satin silk and has a few visible stitches tacking front to back. There is no damage to the silk satin backing and a few squares are showing the damage of time on fragile grosgrain silk. There is no obvious signature, although one square has words printed on the fabric: “Amaryllis Daily – June 22, 1883 – Metropolis, Ill.” Another square has two numbers embroidered on it: “1600” and “76.” The “76” could refer to 1876, the year of the Centennial. The quilt belonged to Evelyn Cassidy Beck-Meyer (1892-1956) my husband’s mother and has been living in storage since she passed. Evelyn typed a note that was included with the quilt stating “Many of the embroidered scraps in this hand-made quilt are over 100 years old. The quilt was pieced by my grandmother [Jane Farnum Cassidy] in about 1885. Some of the pieces were from a collection at the Centennial in Philadelphia in 1876, which were put on sale near the close of the exhibition. Typed signature E.C.
