Barnaby Rudge " Barnaby Rudge " was first printed in book form in 1841. The cheerful, cozy domesticity of the Maypole Inn ; the uneasy relationship between dull-witted, tyrannical John Willet and elegant, cold-hearted John Chester and their sons; the sinister activities of the apprentices plotting to overthrow their masters: all these plunge the reader in the opening chapters into the tense atmosphere of England just before the Gordon Riots. When the storm breaks and Lord George Gordon embarks on this crazed ride into London, the action explodes into violence and mayhem. In his handling of the three riot leaders [ one of them being "Barnaby Rudge" - a man mentally blighted by a crime committed at his birth ], and in his depiction of an infuriated mob storming through the streets of London to burn down Newgate prison , Dickens is at his most brilliant and terrifying. II. Nicholas Nickleby The Life And Adventures Of Nicholas Nickleby "Nicholas Nickleby", as with most of Charles Dickens' work, is fiction based on fact. In1838 Dickens visited a number of the cheap boarding schools of England. At many of these schools the conditions were deplorable, with injuries, including blindness, and death among the students. In the original preface, Dickens, with foresight, denied that any character in the book was based upon a real person. After its publication Dickens was sued for libel and threatened by various schoolmasters. The story follows Nicholas Nickleby - a gentleman's son fallen upon hard times, who sets out to make his way in the often harsh world. Our hearty young hero, Nicholas, takes us on a journey through nineteenth-century England accompanied by some of Dickens's best swaggering scoundrels and most unforgettable eccentrics. From the dungeon-like Yorkshire boys' boarding school run by the cruel Wackford Squeers to the high-spirited stage of Vincent Crummles's extraordinary acting troupe, Nicholas Nickleby is a triumph of the imagination. A marvelously energetic work bursting with scenes of brilliant color, luminous humor, and poignant social commentary. Charles Dickens was ever fond of the happy ending, and eventually, with the assistance of kind patrons, Nicholas and his family overcome their obstacles and achieve economic security and a happy home. III. Sketches By Boz Sketches By Boz ; Illustrative of Every-Day Life and Every-Day People Dicken's sketches of urban life (mostly in London England ) to the Monthly Magazine and other periodicals. " Sketches by 'Boz' " was first printed in 1836. A series of observations written by Dickens early in his writing career, representing his first efforts at authorship. Dickens penned his notes and thoughts concerning common people and scenes he encountered, mostly in London, in the very early 1800's , including: Street Scenes Ladies Societies Scotland Yard ( police ) Meditations on Monmouth Street Hackney Coach Stands Doctor 's Commons London Recreation Greenwich Fair Theatres Early Coaches Omnibuses Cab Drivers Public Dinners The First Of May Shops and Various Businesses Pawnbrokers Newgate Prison The Criminal Courts A Christmas Dinner The New Year The Dancing Academy Shabby (Yet) Genteel People A Boarding House A Steam Excursion A Duel A Drunkard's Death Etc.
