Description: Welcome toMAD MONK BOOKS BOOK TITLEAN EXPLANATION OF THE PSALMSAUTHORRev. James Slade, M.A.Vicar of Bolton, and President of Chester.PUBLISHERSociety for Promoting Christian Knowledge,LondonDATE1840SIZE7" tall, 4.5" deep, 1" thick.PAGES422 EXTERIOR CONDITIONThis spectacular binding is beautifully bound in original black 3/4 leather (spine and corners) with a burgundy colored leather title band on the spine. The binding has ornate gold gilt designs, four raised leather bands, and the title of the book EXPLANATION OF THE PSALMS in gold gilt on the spine of the book. The front and rear covers are covered with a handsome marbled paper with blind stamped lining along the edges of the black leather corners and spine. The binding shows mild to moderate rubbing, bumping and scuffing for a book of this age (over 185 years old). The spine leather has a tiny bit of very minor hairline cracking here and there with approximately 1/8" leather loss to the top edge of the spine. The leather shows very minor "closed" cracking along the top one inch of the front and rear exterior hinges--not effecting the functionality of the two hinges. There is no loose or flapping leather in these areas, and both exterior hinges are holding strong and very functional. The top, bottom and side "edges" of the cover boards have lost there paper covering and are slightly rough to the tough. However, these "edges" have been nicely touched-up with colored markers, enhancing their appearance to the point that the paper loss is hardly noticeable (see attached photos). The gold gilt on the spine of the book remains extremely bright and brilliant with little to no loss or fading. The exterior page edges are marbled with slight age toning and normal dust dulling along the top edge. The book tends to lean to the left when standing alone (see last photo), but stands straight and tall when on a bookshelf between other books. The book if not cocked. At rest, the book does not pop open, but closes tightly, like new. Overall this book is strong, sturdy, handsome and very striking with its beautiful gold gilt designs. This 185 year old book would make a beautiful addition to any library. A picture is worth a thousand words--see attached photos for more detail. INTERIOR CONDITIONThe front and rear endpapers are a light gray/green in color. The paste down portion of the front and rear endpapers are both holding firmly to the boards, like new. The front and rear inside (paper) hinges have little to no cracking--both interior hinges remain quite functional and are holding strong. The text block remains tight with no loose signatures. There are no loose or missing pages throughout the book. The pages throughout the book are crisp, clean and evenly age toned with only minor "foxing" on a handful of front and rear pages (see attached photos as an example). The page corners remain sharp and square with only one or two folded corners. There is an ink signature and inscription dated 1863 on the front end paper--it appears the book was given as a gift in the middle of the Civil War. Other than this inscription, there are no other pencil or ink markings throughout the pages of the book. The book has no smoke, mildew or other unusual odors. Overall, the interior of the book appears as if it was rarely (if ever) read from cover to cover. A picture is worth a thousand words--see attached photos for more detail.
