Additional Information Engraved by renowned silversmith Amos Dolittle this stunning representation of Vermont depicts the state in a period of significant transition and growth. Dolittle became famous for his engravings, illustrating the battles of Lexington and Concord three decades before the publication of this map. Prominent Philadelphia based publisher Matthew Carey introduced this map in 1814 in his General Atlas of the World. This publication was a valued resource throughout much of the newly formed Union as well as Europe. In the early nineteenth century, Vermont was experiencing a boom in milling and textile production, with much of the Northeast experiencing rapid transformation following the conclusion of the Revolutionary War. Following the Revolution, there was considerable interest in publishing and mapping the United States. Early cartographers were busy charting and mapping new states and territories. Technology was advancing, and these productions were considered some of the most technically accurate portrayals of the states compiled from actual land surveys. Vermont was admitted to the United States as the fourteenth state in 1791 with Massachusetts to the South, New York to the West, and New Hampshire to the East. Early French settlers had established many communities throughout the 18th century, which were ceded to British Colonialists following their defeat in the Seven Years’ War in 1763. Vermont is one of only four states to have been an independent Republic before ultimately joining the other colonies to form the United States. This depiction stands as a rare piece of American cartographical history. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Shipped in a sturdy cardboard tube your print will arrive ready to be framed. This eye-catching vintage map reproduction print makes the perfect gift for anyone that loves history and imagery.
